Travelling Abroad

Having a caravan gives you a great opportunity to go abroad and explore different countries. You can travel from one area to another and get to see many parts of the country at your own pace. You're also not restricted to staying at one caravan site or one region, the world really is your oyster.

Below is a number of key bits of information Caravan Sites Direct have listed to help you when planning your trip abroad or while you're away.

Make Sure You Are Equipped

Be Legal - In many EU Countries, it is a legal requirement to carry the following -

Equipment Required By Law

Highly Visible/Reflective Vests

2 vests are needed to travel in Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal & Spain.

Warning Triangles

2 triangles are needed to travel in Croatia, Slovenia, Spain & Turkey.

Fire Extinguishers

Required by law in some Countries.

Spare Bulb Kit

Recommended in many European Countries but mandatory in Andorra, Croatia, The Czech Republic, France, Greece, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain.

Nationality Plate (eg. a GB Sticker)

Remember you will need a GB sticker on both your car and your caravan (unless you have the EU & GB symbol on your plates). Failure to display this can result in a fine.

Beam Deflector

These must be fitted in any country where you drive on the right hand side, to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic.

Extending Mirrors

Legally required in Spain.

Legal Documents

Passport
MOT Certificate
Driving Licence
Copy of Insurance

You will need to ensure your car and caravan insurance is covered for travelling abroad.

Green Card (International Motor Insurance Certificate)

A green card is required to travel in all countries, however your standard UK insurance should cover you in all EU countries. In non EU countries it is a legal requirement to carry a green card.

European Health Insurance Card

Make sure you are covered abroad as medical treatment is expensive.

Other Things To Consider

First Aid Kits
Gas

The gas abroad is different to the UK gas, so make sure you take enough with you for your caravan holiday.

Tool Kit
A Paper Map

You can't always trust your sat nav system.

European Breakdown Cover

Does your UK cover extend to Europe?

Getting Abroad

There are number of ways to get across to both Ireland and Europe. Most of these are by ferry, however the Channel Tunnel is also a fast and convenient way to get to France.

Detailed below is a list of port available in the UK.
