Today, caravans come in many shapes and sizes. From small 2 berth caravans with just the basic needs, to 6 berth monsters that come equipped with everything you could dream of.
When choosing your caravan, the choice can sometimes become overwhelming, so it is important to take some time in understanding exactly what you want from your caravan before taking the plunge.
Below are a number of key factors you may wish to consider when looking to buy a new or used caravan.
This can largely depend on the size of car you intend on towing with. To find out what your car can tow, go to "towing advice" to find out your limits. The other consideration is what you feel confident in towing and how much space you need.
Obviously a basic rule is making sure everyone has a bed, however the size of the caravan does not always depend on how many people are using it. Some couples will find that a 2 berth caravan will suit their needs, but others may want a bit more space or might have pets and therefore opt for a 4 or even 6 berth. Today, the standard 4 berth caravan is normally spacious enough for a family of four, or to accommodate the occasional extra visitor.
As additional accommodation space, don't forget your awning. Most modern awnings can be equipped to sleep the kids or visitors and is often ideal in providing a little extra space.
Some caravans opt for a fixed rear bed, which saves having to make up a bed every night and provides great under bed storage. However be aware that it is not recommended to overload this storage area in transit as it can greatly affect your nose weight.
The fixed bed option is ideal for couples as it gives both a sleeping area and living area, but if there are four or more of you the reduction of living space could make it a little cosy. The size of the beds vary so you should check they are suitable before purchasing.
The washrooms are either located in the middle of the caravan or at the rear. In both cases, newer caravans normally come well equipped with all modern facilities. Many caravan sites cater for showers and toilets, and this is a factor to consider when choosing your caravan.
If you intend on generally using the caravan for washing and showering, you may prefer a washroom at the rear, which usually has a large separate shower, a good size sink and toilet. If you are happy to use the site facilities, a smaller middle positioned washroom may suffice, where the sink and shower are often smaller.

Modern caravan kitchens come equipped with everything you need including a microwave, cooker and hob, sink and fridge. They also provide plenty of storage for food, crockery and utensils. The biggest variance is worktop space and the main question to consider is; how much cooking do you intend on doing? Many caravans also have an external gas point for your BBQ.
The amount of dining and living space greatly depends on how many people will be using it, or how much time will be spent in it.
Most living areas also double up as sleeping, so having a fixed bed will normally compromise some of the living space, but will save you having to convert your beds every night. When choosing try and imagine everyone in it, will it feel cramped or comfortable. The only other decision is colour and style which comes down to personal taste.
